What is HackerTube?

HackerTube is a YouTube-style discovery site created by Andrej Karpathy from videos repeatedly recommended in Hacker News comments. Instead of optimizing a feed for the next click, it turns years of community recommendations into a searchable, browsable library.

Why Karpathy made it

In his launch post, Karpathy described opening YouTube and finding exaggerated thumbnails and repetitive recommendations that did not work for him. His response was to build a personal alternative from a signal he trusted more: links that Hacker News commenters had recommended with real context over many years.

Claude processed the comment archive, filtered out spam and non-recommendations, and narrowed the material to roughly 40,000 recommending comments. Those records produced 6,454 videos from 2007–2026 across 150 topics.

What makes HackerTube different?

Community signal, not an engagement feed

A video enters the collection because different HN commenters returned to it with meaningful context, not because an opaque feed predicts the next click.

A real frame instead of a promotional thumbnail

The original product uses a frame from the middle of a video to reduce the influence of exaggerated, click-optimized thumbnails.

Personal without an account

Likes, history, watch-later state, and recommendations can remain in the local browser instead of requiring a platform identity.

Data designed for reuse

Karpathy made the underlying export available so people can give it to an agent and build another interface, newsletter, or analysis.

Where HackerTube Explorer fits

HackerTube Explorer is an independent third-party guide and curated browser. The official project contains 6,454 videos; this site currently presents 64 editor's picks from its public export, chosen for evergreen value and retained source context. Every displayed record links back to an original Hacker News discussion.
